New program for elementary students, families
makes self-esteem a priority

GEORGETOWN—Talbert House’s Brown County Recovery Services is announcing a new eight-week program for elementary-aged children and their families at two Brown County schools. The program focuses on increasing childhood success and self-esteem.

Families and Schools Together (FAST) began March at Ripley Union Lewis Huntington Elementary and Hamersville Elementary and Middle School. The program has been replicated in over 400 elementary schools since 1988 and is proven by research to be effective. Students in kindergarten and grades one through fourth are eligible.

“FAST provides activities that strengthen the family ties and builds communication bonds within the family unit,” said Brown County Recovery Services director Peggy Foster. “It is important for this age group to build self-esteem, so as they can build upon that solid foundation as they continue through school.”

Each week, the children spend 15 minutes talking with their parents and receive homework tutoring. The group shares dinner and recreational time, and parents get to network with each other.

Family members are invited to attend every week. Brown County Recovery Services staff members, school representatives and a parent run the group sessions.

“We are looking for families who would like to help their child succeed in school while making their own family relationship stronger,” Foster said. “With FAST, families also build bonds with other families, creating a sound network of support.”

For more information, contact Brown County Recovery Services staff members Sandy Hirons for Hamersville Elementary at (937) 444-9259 and Karla Walters for Ripley Union Lewis Huntington Elementary at (937) 392-1141. The program is funded in part by the United Way of Greater Cincinnati.

Talbert House is a community-wide network of social services with over 40 programs focusing on prevention, assessment, treatment and reintegration. Each year, Talbert House helps more than 28,000 men, women and children across Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky overcome adversity to become healthy and productive citizens through its programs in community corrections, mental health, substance abuse and welfare-to-work.
