University of Cincinnati’s Bill Walker
honored for his commitment to help kids resist drugs

CINCINNATI—Talbert House, one of the region’s largest behavioral health and human services agencies, honored Bill Walker, University of Cincinnati assistant athletic director of sports medicine and head athletic trainer, at its 10th Annual Team Up! Cincinnati Golf Outing June 26 at Maketewah Country Club. Talbert House honored Walker because of his commitment for planning the annual charity event.

The university’s athletic department has co-hosted Team Up! Cincinnati since its inception in 1996 with the support of Walker, an original member of the event planning committee. In its first decade, Team Up! Cincinnati has raised $500,000 for Talbert House’s school-based prevention programs. This year’s outing raised over $63,000.

“Bill Walker is the type of volunteer we love at Talbert House,” said Talbert House president Neil Tilow. “He understands that children need many types of role models and saw an opportunity for the university’s athletic department to support the drug prevention programs developed by Talbert House to help kids stay on track and stay in school. With Bill on our side, we can continue helping children make positive choices.”

According to research cited by the Coalition for a Drug-Free Greater Cincinnati, the earlier children begin using alcohol, tobacco or other drugs, the more likely they will experience serious problems, including drug or alcohol dependence. Proceeds from Team Up! Cincinnati help fund face-to-face services for nearly 1,700 school children every year.

Since 1965, Talbert House’s mission is to be a progressive, multi-service, community-based nonprofit agency. Talbert House serves a broad population and develops and delivers services in mental health, community corrections, substance abuse and welfare-to-work. These services have two basic purposes: to improve social behavior and enhance personal recovery and growth.
