Renowned researcher in field of suicide prevention
to provide trainings in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky
Tri-State Suicide Prevention Coalition is sponsoring training by Dr. Kenneth R. Conner
CINCINNATI— Tri-State Suicide Prevention Coalition has sold out two trainings scheduled on October 6 with Dr. Kenneth R. Conner, a renowned researcher in the field of suicide prevention.
These sessions will explore suicide risk management with chemically dependent clients. The training will emphasize the role of agency administrators and clinical leaders in creating policies and protocols that support effective treatment of clients with substance abuse issues who are suicidal.
According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a person dies by suicide every 18 minutes in the United States. Twenty percent of American high school students report having seriously considered suicide during the previous 12 months.
At the training, mental health and substance abuse professionals will review risk factors, warning signs, protective factors, and a four-step process for managing suicide risk. Each attendee will receive a copy of Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 50, a publication by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Dr. Kenneth Conner is an Investigator of Excellence at the Canandaigua VA Center in New York and an Associate Professor at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where he is Co-Director of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Suicide. He has presented and published research on substance abuse and suicide and is a past recipient of a national research award from the American Association of Suicidology. Conner chaired the national SAMHSA committee that produced TIP 50. He also authored the accompanying training video produced by the Veterans Administration that will serve as the basis for the training in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.
This event is made possible by the Tri-State Suicide Prevention Coalition and is sponsored by Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation, Cincinnati Veterans Administration Medical Center, NorthKey Community Care, Mental Health America – Northern Kentucky, Talbert House and Transitions – Northern Kentucky.
