Talbert House Compassion Capital Program 2010

Talbert House’s Compassion Capital Program (THCCP) is a capacity building program aimed primarily at smaller, emerging and existing faith-based and community organizations (FBCOs) that currently serve, or propose to serve, individuals and/or families in 19 counties in Southwestern Ohio and are committed to addressing the many challenging socioeconomic issues that impact the area. The program is in partnership with the Executive Service Corps of Cincinnati.

All activities are free to FBCO program participants. For this program, 160 FBCOs will be admitted, offered a total of 240 hours of training, a total of 2,000 hours of technical assistance, coaching, mentoring. Thirty of the FBCOs accepted into the program will be awarded competitive sub-awards ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. The purpose of THCCP is to support organizations that promote the economic and social well-being of families, children, individuals and communities, primarily FBCOs that provide social safety net services; rehabilitative services; and children/youth and family services in the following critical Compassion Capital Fund priority areas:

  • Low-income individuals seeking to gain greater access to State and Federal benefits and tax credits
  • Individuals seeking to secure and retain employment, earn higher wages, and obtain better-quality jobs
  • Individuals and families in need of financial education, credit counseling, and access to individual development accounts and other asset building strategies
  • The homeless
  • Elders in need
  • At-risk youth
  • Families in transition from welfare-to-work

Faith-based and Community Organizations located in the following counties are eligible to participant in the comprehensive capacity building competency development program:

  • Logan
  • Madison
  • Mercer
  • Miami
  • Montgomery
  • Pickaway
  • Preble

TYPES OF SERVICES PROVIDED
Program objectives include assessing individual FBCO’s to help identify capacity strengths and challenges and establish capacity building goals. Results from the assessment will guide the development of trainings and individualized capacity building development plans, which will focus on four critical areas of capacity building:

  • Leadership Development
  • Organizational Development
  • Program Development
  • Community Engagement

Service provision strategies provided by this program include:

  • Capacity Building Competency Assessment
  • Individualized Capacity Building Development Plan (ICBDP)
  • Coaching/Mentoring /Technical assistance
  • Regional group-based training related to promising practices for effective nonprofit organizations
  • E-learning platform
  • Specialized trainings offered by Talbert House Institute for Training and Development
  • $200,000 in competitive sub-awards to fund capacity building activities

ELIGIBLE ORGANIZATIONS
Eligible applicants include non-profit faith-based and community-based organizations (FBCOs) in Southwest Ohio that meet the following qualifications:

  • FBCOs must be located in the counties listed in this brochure
  • Priority for program admittance will be given to FBCOs working in or planning to work in the social service priority areas listed in this brochure
  • FBCOs that are NOT in partnership through memoranda of understanding (MOU), subcontracts, or sub-awards with Talbert House are eligible.
  • Organizations that partner with Talbert House to deliver technical assistance or provide cost-sharing funds for the proposed program are not eligible.
  • THCCP does not require participants to have 501(c)(3) status or to identify a sponsoring organization with 501(c)(3) status.
  • Priority for program admittance is given to FBCOs whose annual budgets do not exceed $500,000.
  • Priority for program admittance is given to FBCOs who participated in Ohio TANF Training Program 2008-2009.

LOCATIONS & E-LEARNING
Through THCCP, 40 trainings will be offered in Cincinnati, Dayton, Sidney and Washington Court House throughout the program period. A best practice curriculum model will be used that includes up to seventeen customized capacity building topics to provide FBCOs a rich, diverse learning experience. A goal of the program is to be as accessible as possible to the FBCOs by offering multiple training opportunities in multiple locations, including online.
