CINCINNATI – Talbert House debuted their twelfth annual Fatherhood Celebration presented by the Hatton Foundation on October 15. The event supports the Talbert House Fatherhood Project, a program that assists men in their efforts to become responsible, committed and nurturing dads. Demetrius Dallas, Tom Otten and George Schaefer were all recognized as Fathers of the Year.

The virtual event featured John Brannen, head coach for men’s basketball at the University of Cincinnati. With a coaching career that spans twenty seasons, John is a role model for his players. John and his wife Lisa are the proud parents of twin daughters.

Demetrius Dallas, father of six, came to the Fatherhood Project in 2018 with the hopes of securing custody of three of his children. He strengthened his parenting skills through the Nurturing Fathers Class and was able to achieve his goal. Demetrius gives back through his Community Cycles initiative which gives neighborhood kids access to bikes.

Tom Otten, former Principal of Elder High School, created a sense of family among his students and staff until his retirement in 2016. Tom and his late wife, Bonnie, were married 55 years and have five children. He is also the ‘proud pops’ to 14 grandchildren.

George Schaefer was President and Chairman of Fifth Third Bank for 18 years before his retirement in 2008. George met his wife of 52 years, Betty Ann, while attending Elder High School. The couple have three children and ten grandchildren.

Usually hosted as a luncheon, the event is an annual fundraiser allowing Talbert House to provide services at no charge to fathers. Due to COVID-19, this year’s event was held virtually via an online video featuring the 2020 Fathers of the Year, a Q&A with the keynote and an update on the Fatherhood Project. The video can be viewed at TalbertHouse.org

The event chaired by Mark Addy raised over $230,000 for Talbert House’s Fatherhood Project. The Hatton Foundation, Fifth Third Bank, Midland Atlantic Properties, PLK Communities, The Marge & Charles J. Schott Foundation and Cintech Construction were among a long list of generous sponsors.

Talbert House would like to thank all those who supported the event, as well as the Fatherhood Committee members: Mark Addy, John Silverman, Bernie Calonge, Seth Coyle, Ryan Dunlap, Tom Finn, Gary Fisher, Carol Goodman, Mark Gordon, Jack Greiner, John Heath, David Hoguet, James Horn, Matt Kitchen, Peter Klekamp, Craig Kurz, Dr. Mitchel Livingston, Kevin McDonald, Michael McQueary, Alex Meacham, Greg Miller, Jesse Mullins, Todd Pease, Austin Poston, Jen Sherwood, Tom Slager, Gary Strassel, Dan Vogelpohl, and Ben Willingham.
